ZeroWater ZD-013 Filtration Pitcher with Electronic Tester, Filter Included

Before I bought this filter, I read some reviews, and some of them weren’t very flattering. But I decided to try. NEVER AGAIN. I used only one filter and did not even buy a replacement, but threw the whole pitcher out and bought Brita. It all started very well, although it bothered me a bit that the filter had only one tiny hole at the bottom. However, in about a week or so, the water would only drip and it took literally 20 minutes to filter amount of water enough for one cup. Basically, if I wanted a decent amount of filtered water I had to start filtering 2 hours in advance. Talk about inconvinience. But thats not it. At some point the water started to smell like foul fish. First I thought, maybe my water boiler was dirty, or the cups, or whatever the reason. But at some point I gathered that it was filter. Ok, I admit that by that time the tester was showing 0.22, which is way over 0.06, but those numbers changed literally within a week. I understand that this filter filters water pretty good, but I am telling you if one time you forget to change filter before it starts smelling, you won’t very easy forget this stench. It was enough for me to switch to Brita, which does not show 0.00, but actually has 4 holes at the bottom of the filter and does not stink like foul fish. NEVER, NEVER AGAIN.

I bought the pitcher for home and the bottle for my office. The water that comes out is really good if you believe the electronic tester which I do. The taste is great as long as it lasts. I have to change filters once every 3 weeks at home with one person using it. This is really expensive water when you fiqure the filters are going to cost $15 each. I don’t think you are really saving anything over buying bottled water.

I bought a new pitcher in Aug. of this year and was excited to get it. Amazon has a terrific return policy and there was no proplem returning it because it showed up in poor condition. The box had definately been gone through and was sloppily put back together with the electronic tester missing.
I do not buy a used item, I bought it new. This was very dissapointing as I was looking forward to clean, cold water on hot days. Amazon however, took the item back no problem.
Since that time, the makers of zerowater tried to supposedly make a political statement by refusing to run ads during a particular show I listened to. After contacting the company, somehow they’re advertising on it now. All that to say I still will buy one again, considering all reviews.

I bought this product to replace a PUR pitcher unit. The concept seemed fine — I would be able to measure my drinking water and know without a doubt when the filter needed replacing (unlike the life of a PUR filter which is really a matter of faith. One month? Two? Three?) My municipal tap water has a horrible aftertaste, like a cross between sulfur and rotting grass clippings. I just can’t believe it’s good for one’s health. The county assures us that it meets all applicable regulations, but I have my doubts.
According to the measuring device that came with the pitcher my tap water particulate concentration is in the 130-160 ppm range. This appears to be within the normal range for municipal water in the U.S ( I live in Virginia).
My first pitcher of Zero Water came out at “0″, which made me happy. However, after less than 10 gallons of filtered water, the Zero Water filter rate began to slow down dramatically, even though the measurement read only 6 ppm. I would refill the upper chamber and an hour or so later it would still be half full. I shook it vigorously but this did no good at all. At this usage rate I estimated that I would be better off buying bottled water at about a dollar a gallon. The filters do not come cheap.
But, the most alarming thing of all was that towards the last couple of gallons of filtered water I would begin to feel “odd” after drinking a glass of water or a cup of coffee. The feeling is difficult to explain. I would become lethargic and my mental acuity would drop noticeably. I had difficulty remembering simple words or names. My joints and leg muscles would ache mildly. I had no energy, I walked around in a daze and felt as though I was 80 years old. In truth, it was as though I’d been give a soporific of some sort. The first time it happened, I thought it might be the beginnings of the swine flu, but the lethargy would pass after about 6-8 hours and I’d be better by evening. The next day the listless feeling would return again after drinking the filtered water. I did this ad hoc experiment a couple of times, and each time the result was the same. When I realized that it wasn’t my imagination I grew very concerned about my long-term health. I tossed the filter and stored the pitcher away in my garage. Since then I’ve gone back to drinking store bought bottled water and feel like my old self again.
This is my conclusion: the Zero Water filter may well remove particulates, but I’m convinced that it concentrates them inside the filter and then releases them in a torrent when the filter has reached a certain point in its useful life. I suspect that the active culprit might be nitrites or nitrates in high concentrations that rob the body of the ability to transport oxygen. I view the Zero Water as a potentially dangerous product that, in its current form, should be taken off the market. I shudder to think what this type of contaminated water might do a child.

I bought this due to being pregnant and having a lot of stomach aches after drinking water straight from the tap and filtered through the Brita System. I wanted to wait to give this product a review after having/using it for at least a month. I’ve now had and used it for a month and a half and I love Zero Water. I actually purchased this brand new in the box at a discount store so I haven’t paid the regular price for it yet, but am more than ready and willing to do this after having used it for over a month.
I’m surprised by the majority of negative reviews for this product. I’m not sure what type of filtration people are used to. It seems like the average expectations are a little too high. The filter can only do so much based on how loaded your tap is with pollutants or chemicals (floride, etc.)! When I tested my tap with the electronic tester included in the Zero Water package it tested at 91. Some reviewers said their tap tested at over 500!! One person even said over 800, I think!!! When I tested tap water that had been filtered by my Brita system it tested at 60. After using Zero Water daily (and I am drinking a lot of water due to my pregnancy – even filling up a 2 liter water bottle to carry to work daily) for over a month, I am happy to report that this water is still testing at 000 and I have absolutely no more stomach aches from drinking the filtered tap!
I have not had any mold issues with this pitcher yet and have only washed it once since having it AND I leave it out on the counter… not in the cold refrigerator. It does not take “hours” for water to be filtered through it… at the most it takes maybe 10 mins and I can live with that.
One note I would like to make is that I am the only one using it in my household. My husband and I looked at the Amazon reviews for Zero Water and the cost and felt it would be better for only me to use it due to not wanting to buy expensive new filters all the time, but I would say that I am drinking enough filtered water for two people. When it’s finally time to change out the filter at 006, I will have my husband and I use it and see how long the filter lasts.
I am more than satisfied with this product. Great tasting, clean water… no more stomach aches from added Flouride or whatever else is in regular tap AND no worries about consuming large amounts of BPA from bottled water that has been sitting in cheap plastic for who knows how long. Highly recommended.
