I recently bought some of these colorful polycarbonate containers to take hiking, and they worked great. I was blissfully unaware that Nalgene got its start making lab cages and other labware. Then for no discernible reason I decided to search the net for more information on polycarbonate (Nalgene and Lexan are trademarks for products made from it) and now I’ve decided to go back to the good old polyethylene containers hikers have used for decades. Here’s why:
Mounting evidence strongly suggests that Bisphenol A (a compound that leaches from polycarbonate into foods stored in polycarbonate containers like those trademarked Lexan or Nalgene) is a pervasive human endocrine disruptor with many seriously adverse health effects even at tiny doses far less than those permitted under current US regulations. For more information, read about Nalgene at wikipediadotcom or ourstolenfuturedotcom (I’ve written the addresses this way to avoid Amazon’s link-deletion robots, but I’m sure you understand).

I am furious about this product. I purchased 3 and am now stuck with them. My husband accidently knocked it off a table and it shattered like glass. This was the very first time he used it! Durable, I don’t think so!! The whole reason to buy Nalgene is for it’s durability, this new material just does not hold up.

It’s great that it’s BPA-free. Good call from Nalgene.
But I’m utterly mystified about this bottle’s design:
1. The “wide mouth” is so wide that you can’t drink from it without pouring the contents all over your chin and chest. Forget about sipping from this bottle in the car. Also, the edge of the opening is sorta sharp…for a drinking container.
2. The bottle is too wide to fit into a standard auto cup holder (it’s about the width of a wine bottle), so it’s probably too wide to fit a bicycle bottle holder. Who thought THAT was a smart design decision??
3. The rubber cap holder has to be MANUALLY held down whenever you sip from the bottle; if you don’t, you get dinked in the face with it. On top of that, the bottle is so wide that you end up having to use TWO HANDS just to drink from it!!
Wow, I’m really unimpressed.

I already reviewed the 32 oz. Wide Mouth Loop Top Bottles but wanted to add that I purchased the pretty pink bottle for my daughter, knowing that the pretty color would please her. She is very happy with the color, it makes it easy to tell her bottle apart from other family members’ bottles, and the clean taste of the water along with knowing it’s a BPA-Free product ensures that she will take it with her wherever she goes! We are very happy with this product.

These bottles are wonderful. They are pretty, but most of all they do not leech toxins in our drinks.
